SSD vs HD

I would like to discuss the differences between a standard hard drive and a solid state drive. Also known as SSD. I see a lot of slow computer issues come across our ticket system and we always highly recommend that if you don’t want to purchase a new PC because of budget constraints or the computer isn’t very old and it still has plenty of life left in it, then you should consider replacing the hard drive with a SSD Drive. I always see significant improvement when we do this.

The reason solid state drive performed better is that there are no moving parts in the component it is very much like flash memory or a USB stick. The drives are built to last longer and protect your data better while increasing performance and productivity. If I had to put a number to it, this resolves 90 to 95% of the performance issues on a computer. Memory upgrades are typically the second factor that will increase the performance, depending on the need and what programs you run.

Typical boot times may range from 45 seconds to 2 or 3 minutes.  After migrating to an SSD drive, I typically see 18 second boot times.

The Process

The process is simple and takes approximately 2 hours.  However, I have seen it take upwards of 6 to 8 hours on severely degraded hard drives.  Some SSD manufacturers will have an app you can download to aid in the process of migrating your old system to the new one.  I prefer to use Samsung SSD drives for the performance and the ease of migrating.  I download their app called Data Migration Wizard and the majority of the time it is as simple as clicking next a few times.  Samsung Data Migration Wizard will only work if you are cloning to a Samsung SSD Drive.

Once the cloning is completed, it is now safe to turn off the computer or laptop.  Open up the case and replace the drive.  This is where it can get a little tricky.  If you are replacing a computer hard drive with an SSD drive, you may need to purchase a mounting bracket for approximately $10.  You can also use a thin strip of double-sided sticky tape or my favoring is using command hook wall hangers.  This way it is easier to remove the strip in the future.  If you are replacing a laptop hard drive, the existing mounting brackets fit for the new SSD drive.

Another great product for those unique situations is EaseUs Disk Copy Pro.  You can do Sector by Sector backups and modify partitions.  Sometimes I will find that the EaseUs product works faster on the process and if the old hard drive has errors or bad sectors, EaseUs will handle the migration better than others.

How old is too old?  We have migrated 10 year old workstations.  Keep in mind if you do the least of your worries will be Hard Drive performance and data loss.  10 years is a long time for a computer or laptop.
